- Anticlimax Boss: The Rivales father and son are both pathetically easy, being taken down in half a trial day, despite being the culprits of their chapter.
- Base-Breaking Character: Douglas Ford. Either he's an interesting and complex character who offers a welcome challenge as the Final Boss or an annoying antagonist who takes far too long to beat.
- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The hidden ending where Apollo gets trapped in the nonary games comes out of nowhere and does not fit in with the story in the very least. It's both hilarious and oddly terrifying.
- Complete Monster: Nathan Mags is the CEO of Red Co. who, desiring wealth and power by any means, finances the Rivales crime syndicate to use them as his personal enforcers, forcing them and his own employees into murdering anyone who gets in his way while letting innocents take the blame for his crimes. Killing Matt Doore to stop him from revealing his involvement in burning an Interpol agent alive, Nathan then tries to kill Phoenix Wright to stop him from getting involved. From behind bars, Nathan helps capture all his co-conspirators out of resentment that they're free while he's not, using his cooperation to gaslight Apollo Justice while boasting about his evil deeds, hoping to get a lighter sentence rather than help for any altruistic reason.
- Genius Bonus: Douglas Ford and Wade Waters mean the exact same thing. It's a blatant but very obtuse bit of foreshadowing.
- Love to Hate: Nathan Mags is such an unashamed Card-Carrying Villain that at times, it's easy to forget he's also the biggest Hate Sink in the game.
- That One Boss: Douglas Ford/Wade Waters. He has several different personas, with each one getting progressively more difficult and lengthy.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The corrupt judge never gets any comeuppance for his actions, other than being told off by Athena and Apollo. Taking him down too would have made for a satisfying moment.
