YMMV / A Princess for Christmas

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Maddie, probably due to her characterization as a Cheerful Child, does not seem to angst over the death of her parents like the rest of the family does.
  • Cliché Storm: A romance between a middle-class American woman and a European prince, snobbish aristocrats who despise anything and anyone who is common, a love rival who's a caricatured Alpha Bitch, all wrapped up in a Christmas wishes atmosphere... However, the movie used those clichés before Netflix made them more common in its original Christmas movies and it also made more of an effort to examine the serious side, showing Jules facing hostility for being a middle-class American and her, the kids' and the royal family's grief at their loss.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In order to convince Jules to come to Castlebury, Paisley falsely claims that Duke Edward has a terminal illness that has left him with little time left to see his grandchildren. Following Roger Moore's death in 2017 from lung and liver cancer, the Wounded Gazelle Gambit and reveal that Edward is actually perfectly healthy is bound to sting a little.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Ashton is played by Sam Heughan, three years before his Star-Making Role in Outlander.
  • Unexpected Character: It's not unusual that Maddie believe in Santa Claus and talks about him, but you certainly did not expect the real one (or it is?) showing up in the living room in the last scene.
