This will hurt.

A Betty Boop cartoon by Max and Dave Fleischer released on March 2, 1934.

In Max Fleischer's office, Max draws Betty and then leaves for quitting time. Koko the Clown pops out of an inkwell and helps himself to a candy bar on the desk, but ends up getting a serious toothache. Betty draws a dentist office and tries to pull out Koko's bad tooth. When that doesn't work, she tries to alleviate the pain with some laughing gas, but that ends up spreading to her and to everyone and everything in New York City.

This cartoon marked the last appearance of Koko in a theatrical short.

Tropes Used in This Short:

  • Abstract Scale: The scale on the laughing gas canister ranges from (from least to greatest), "Groans, Titters, Giggles, Laughs, Hysterics".
  • Afraid of Doctors: Even with his tooth causing him tremendous pain, as soon as Koko sees the dentist office Betty drew, he tries to flee.
  • Art Initiates Life: Betty is drawn into this cartoon by her "Uncle Max" and she draws a fully working dentist office for her use.
  • Cuckoo Clock Gag: A cuckoo clock on Max's wall shoots out a cuckoo bird that "cuckoos" and then leaves with a suitcase while locking it's cuckoo clock behind it, indicating that it's quitting time.
  • The Dentist Episode: Betty draws a dentist office and brings it upon herself to relive Koko of his toothache.
  • Everything Talks: When the laughing gas starts leaving the office and floods over New York City, everything comes to life and starts laughing hysterically.
  • False Teeth Tomfoolery: One sequence has a pair of false teeth and pliers fighting each other until the pliers successfully rips out a tooth.
  • Have a Gay Old Time: A lyric from Betty's song is "I feel so silly and so queer".
  • Helpless with Laughter: Betty, Koko and all of New York are all in hysterics thanks to the laughing gas.
  • Laughing Gas: Betty tries to use some to help Koko with his toothache, but it spreads all over, affecting her too. Not before long it continues to spread all over the office and out the window in the streets of New York, causing everyone and everything to laugh uproariously.
  • Panty Shot: Betty's bloomers are visible when she first leaps out of the paper she's drawn on and while she's rolling on the floor laughing.
  • Phony Degree: When Betty draws a dentist's office, she also draws a diploma with her name printed on it, which most likely doesn't count as a real degree.
  • Sentient Vehicle: A pair of cars come to life and start laughing once the laughing gas reaches them.
  • Skewed Priorities: Even with her friend in pain, Betty still takes a moment to use a compact mirror to re-apply some makeup to herself.
  • The Tooth Hurts: Eating part of a candy bar (normal sized, but giant to him) gives Koko a massive toothache.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Betty retrieves a compact mirror from down the front of her Little Black Dress.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Koko's toothache is never resolved, but he's too high on laughing gas to care.
  • X-Ray of Pain: When Koko's tooth starts hurting, we see a close up and x-ray, showing two tiny imp like figures inside his tooth using sledgehammers on the connecting nerve.
