Western Animation / Donalds Happy Birthday

Go To

Donald's Happy Birthday is a 1949 cartoon starring Donald Duck.

Donald's young nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie are planning to buy their uncle a box of cigars as a birthday present, but when they need the money for it, their uncle starts to get suspicious...

Tropes:

  • Birthday Episode: This episode is set on Donald's birthday, which here is on March 13. This was before Disney officially retconned his birthday as June 9.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: During the Radish Cure scene, Donald basically goes berserk, shoving the cigars into his nephews' mouths and lighting them up in a montage more befitting a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown (at one point a sick Huey even tried to drag himself away only for Donald to grab him by the ankle, drag him back into the room and give him another cigar).
  • Happy Birthday to You!: The cartoon's instrumental music score frequently features the traditional song, most notably during the end titles.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: When Donald reads the card, Louie's name is spelt as "Luey".
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Donald reacts this way when he learns that the nephews actually bought the cigars for him, and he made them smoke them all.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The nephews secretly buy Donald a box of cigars for his birthday, but because of several reasons note , he thought they'd bought the cigars for themselves.
  • Radish Cure: Most infamously, Donald makes his nephews smoke all the cigars, thinking that they've taken up smoking.
  • Shameful Shrinking: Once Donald learns that the cigars are actually for him, he becomes so mortified that he shrinks down to the size of a bug in humiliation and runs away.
