It serves no purpose other than to be a manifestation of the author's beliefs about [[spoiler:a geocentric orbit making no sense]] and to make the DarkestHour more dark. It has no impact on the over all plot and had it never even been in the comic, there'd have been virtually no change to it at all. It even creates more {{Plot Hole}}s than it addresses.
