Go To

The channel currently known as Young ELO started out doing various videos, but decided to focus on chess after a certain incident in April 2021: In one of GothamChess's Guess the ELO episodes, Levy Rozman encountered a 1600-rated player who was playing poorly for his rating, causing Levy to go on a rant that was turned into a rap song. After that song went viral, Young ELO created two meme-heavy, chess-themed diss tracks from the 1600-rated player's perspective. Since then the channel has uploaded various chess videos.

Despite the name, the channel has no relation to Electric Light Orchestra.

Look, I saw tropes to add, I just didn't like them:

  • Answer Song: "Checkmate" is the 1600-rated player's answer to Levy's rant / rap song. He explains that he didn't miss rook a4, he just didn't like it, brags about his skills and claims he can crush Levy.
  • Bowdlerise: He uploaded a clean version of "Mate In One" because he was notified that Hikaru wouldn't react to it because it wasn't family-friendly. (Hikaru still didn't react to it.)
  • The Cover Changes the Meaning: "Lose Your Queen", a chess-themed cover of Eminem's "Lose Yourself".
  • The Diss Track:
    • In "Checkmate", an Answer Song to Levy's rap rant / song, the 1600-rated player disses Levy by bragging about his own skills and claiming he can crush Levy. He also says that Levy tries to act like he's very righteous, but he's not that good — he's just Hikaru Nakamura's sidekick/side gig/side chick.
    • In "Mate In One", he takes aim at Hikaru Nakamura for his alleged big ego and toxic behaviour, and claims that he only relies on bullet chess because he can't play classical.note
  • Early Instalment Weirdness: Young ELO is now a chess channel, but its first videos were about Call of Duty.
  • Hypocritical Humor: The 1600-rated player accuses Levy and Hikaru of having inflated egos despite being a clear case of Small Name, Big Ego himself.
  • I Meant to Do That: In "Checkmate", the 1600-rated player claims that he did see the move that would've trapped his opponent's queen, but rejected it because he "just didn't like it".
  • Small Name, Big Ego: The 1600-rated player as portrayed by Young ELO thinks he can beat chess masters like Levy Rozman and Hikaru Nakamura.
  • Understatement: Two of the songs have their narrators refer to playing "a couple games" while the music video shows an online chess account with over 490,000 games on it.note
