The Progenies is a fan-made web series based around the setting and characters of Disney's Descendants. The show was created by Harriyanna Hook, a Youtube personality best known for her commentary videos on racism in children's shows. Hook describes the show as "a series about black and Latina girlhood, told through the characters of Disney’s Descendants".

The show takes place after the events of Descendants 2 and ignores the events of the third film.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Name Change: Mal goes by Mallory. Jay still goes by Jay, mostly, but his name is Jayden.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Ben and Evie are romantically involved, in the series, and Mal and Evie are much less friendly with each other. Also, Evie and Doug have broken up.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: The Descendants franchise does not have any characters who are explicitly canonically non-heterosexual. In The Progenies, Carlos and Jay are dating. The show's creator made a post on Tumblr outlining the sexuality of the various characters.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Mallory asks Evie whether she really likes Ben, or if she just wants to get back at Mal for being a bad friend, Evie is momentarily dumbfounded.
  • Color Wash: A big part of the aesthetic of the show is the way that each episode is tinted overwhelmingly with a particular color.
  • Darker and Edgier: As is common in Descendants fan works, the series deals with heavier matters than were addressed in the movies.
  • Extreme Doormat: In the Uno episode, Evie is the only one willing to put up with Mal's rudeness and poor sportsmanship. When Mal throws all of the cars on the floor, Evie cleans them up.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Done to all of Descendants 3.
  • Live-Action Adaptation: Of Descendants: Wicked World. While most of the Descendants characters have been seen in live action before, this show also adapts characters whose canonical appearances were animated, such as Freddie and Ally.
  • Race Lift: Many, if not all, of the characters are portrayed by actors of color, including Mal and Jane, who were white in the Descendants movies.
  • With Friends Like These...: Jay and Carlos themselves point out that Mallory isn't a good friend and they don't really enjoy having her around.
  • Wham Line: When Mallory tells Evie, "I know about you and Ben."
