Kennie J.D. is a make up and movie review youtuber.

While she used to do story time, she is now more well known for her series "Bad Movies and a Beat", where she talks about movie while putting her make up on. This later expanded also on "Good Movies and a Glam", a rarer series where she talks about good movies or at least movies she doesn't think are as bad as others think.

She is also a part of media brand focused on pop culture "More Butter", a shared venture with Amanda The Jedi and Mista GG, where she participates on the podcasts "Camp Counselor" together with the other two and "In Defense Of", a podcast of her own where she judges whether poorly received movies truly deserved the reputation they got.

Tropes discussed

  • Bait-and-Switch: "Red, White & Royal Blue is disappointing! I wanted it to be bad!". In the video, she mentions how she expected the movie to be bad, but she ended Squeeing so much at a cheesy, fun and lovable romance that she had to make the video a "Good Movies & a Glam".
  • Do Wrong, Right: Briefly touched upon in her video regarding Ned from The Try Guys. She is beffudled by the fact that he was having a very visible affair despite his public image as a family man and the ruin it could cause to him and the brand he represents, surprised and annoyed he wouldn't even at least try to hide it. She then wonders whether that is a sign of an absurd amount of self-confidence that nothing could actually happen to him despite his actions, or such a deep self-loathing that he was hoping such an affair would blow up everything he worked for.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In her review of The Ultimatum, she mentions how the participants of the show seem to be awful at communicating with one another, providing ease for them to misinterpret each other and worsening.
  • Running Gag: "A brooding hot 25 year old teenager"
  • Shout-Out: She describes The Menu as her fantasy of murder mystery dinner theater if it were real, referring to an episode of Bob's Burgers, even showing a shot of Linda Belcher during that episode.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequelinvoked: Discussed. She gives props to The Kissing Booth 3, considering it one step above the others despite being a technically still pretty middling movie, for having genuine good messages, such as making choices for yourself rather than pleasing others, and addressing issues of the previous movies, like calling out Lee's attachment to rules he and Elle created when they were children.
  • There Are No Therapists: A huge point of contention of her with some romance stories are that the men that are Troubled, but Cute clearly need actual professional help, not simply the love of a woman. She gives examples of Hardin from After being someone who genuinely could use therapy, rather than hoping his romance would fix him.
  • Troubled, but Cute: She talks about this trope a lot, considering how many romance movie come up. These are a very common archetype for the kind of man that plays the main romantic interest, but she points out that this makes the characters very unlikable to the point where she doesn't understand why women would want them anyway, and that there is an aspect of fetishization of male trauma in these works, where women don't want just a man, but a man that is broken and that they can fix, presenting a past of abuse as something alluring. This last point is another thing she mentions, pointing out that, in reality, women can't fix the men they are dating, only a person can fix oneself, and the idea of a woman being responsible for fixing the men they date is infuriating to her.
Kennie: Not the pussy being therapy. Not the pussy being refuge. Not the pussy warding off demons. Are you struggling with PTSD, talk to your doctor about "The Pussy".
  • The Unblinking: Brings up the trope when talking about one of the characters in the movie Teeth.
Kennie: I knew he was a weirdo because he doesn't blink enough for me! The theory I have is that evil people don't blink enough because they're thinking of all the evil sh*t they wanna do, so they don't remember to do basic human functions. Think about it. When have you ever felt comfortable with someone staring at you without blinking?
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valleyinvoked: Discussed. She mentions that some of the men meant to be Tall, Dark, and Handsome as leads in romantic movies sometime come across as this to her, being almost too handsome to the point they are offputting; she describes their appearance as if an AI or an alien race tried to put together the ideal western ideal of beauty.
