This is a "Wild Mass Guess" entry, where we pull out all the sanity stops on theorizing. The regular entry on this topic is elsewhere. Please see this programme note.
Woyzeck
Woyzeck's paranoia is at least partly based on a misunderstanding
  • The German word for "subversion" (not as in Subverted Trope, but the common definition) is "untergraben", with "unter" meaning "below" and "graben" meaning "to dig". (Compare "undermining".) Probably the officer or the doctor ranted about the Freemasons subverting society, which the uneducated Woyzeck took literally. That's why Woyzeck rambles about Freemasons having dug below the earth until everything's hollowed out during that scene with Andres.
