Mr. Munson was watching over Ms. Munson even after death.
There is no way any of the events after the Caper Crew arrives and dies is a coincidence. The way the Caper Crew dies from either betraying one another or by accident is most likely chalked up to Mr. Munson protecting his living wife from the thieves.

Pickles was being possessed by the late Mr. Munson.
If anything is to go by, the Caper Crew assumed that the old lady was their true enemy. She wasn't. In fact, it was the late Mr. Munson who was the threat to the whole crew. Examples provided:
  • The fact that the cat memorised the route leading to the trash barges passing by is most likely Mr. Munson spying on the Caper Crew when they start abusing the kindness of his wife.
  • It even comes into play when Garth accidentally blows off his finger. Why does the cat hold on to the finger? To keep Garth from participating in the attempted murder of Ms. Munson. By handicapping him, Garth could only do so much with a hand that was one finger short.
  • After the Caper Crew is already dead and Ms. Munson plans on donating the stolen money to Bob Jones University, Pickles spits out the finger into the passing trash barges. The reason? Mr. Munson's job is now complete. His wife is safe and the thieves are dead.
