Look closely—there are no children in Backwater, and not just because the inclusion of children would make the massacre in the rain even more horrifying than it already is. Not only are there no children, but there are also no crops, no visible businesses, and no real reason for anyone to go there. The town itself is dying—the citizens just sped up the process.
