Knuckles is going to be hit with The Worf Effect
In an effort to really give Shadow's appearance gravitas Knuckles will be the one to take one for the team and get steamrolled in his first encounter with the black hedgehog, leaving him a minor character for the runtime of the film. The fact he's getting his own series may also factor into this, giving them a chance to build up his character via supplementary work if they plan to reduce his role in the film. Metal Sonic will appear in a post credit scene by Robotnik or Agent Stone after Shadow turns to the good side upon discovering the truth behind Maria's final wish.
