The player characters are trying for a quasi Gender-Equal Ensemble this time around
Pokemon Evolutions has thus far gone in a pattern—Galar gets Victor, Alola gets Selene, Kalos gets Calem and Unova gets Hilda. That's a boy, then a girl, then a boy, then a girl. And we already know that Hoenn will get May. Going by this pattern, Lucas will most likely be the protagonist of Sinnoh (being between Unova and Hoenn, which both have female protagonists) and Ethan will be the one for Johto. Kanto will be the exception, since Red is irrevocably considered canon—Leaf being the protagonist of the Kanto Evolutions installment ironically signals that she's not the player character.- UPDATE: A Freeze-Frame Bonus from this
trailer suggests Elaine will be the "player character" stand-in for Kanto instead of Red. We still haven't seen Lucas or Ethan yet, but this seems to lend support to this theory.- Confirmed. Lucas is the PC alongside Barry for The Rival; May is the one moving to face Zinnia and Rayquaza in The Wish; and while he only is seen from the back for a second, Ethan does appear in The Show. All that remains as of this writing is either Green or Elaine.
