Refugee tunnel
The tunnel of birds comes from underneath Solla Sollew. The birds are refugees from Solla Sollew, tunneling out of the city.- The lad says the birds are "going all the wrong way"—which of course means he is the one going the wrong way. He goes against the flow of traffic, and comes out on the banks of River Wah-Hoo. If you reverse that, it means the birds are coming from somewhere around the city, and heading away from it.
- They're carrying "bikes, dishes, ladders, beds, bottles and fishes"—miscellaneous pieces of their lives, the kind of things refugees might carry.
The main character is either the same species as the main character in The Foot Book or him as a child.
