WMG / Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio

Go To

After the events of the film, Pinocchio will inevitably rot away, allowing him to be Together in Death with his family.
  • Pinocchio has shown to not be completely invulnerable to damage, as his feet burn away and Geppetto must make him new ones, meaning that he can be destroyed. He's just much more resilient due to being made out of polished wood. Wood eventually rots away, either from weather and age, to bugs or sickness, and when it does, that will be Pinocchio's equivalent of dying of old age.

Relating the WMG above, Pinocchio will live eternally on earth for many billions of years until he finally dies by the now supergiant sun.

The characters in this movie represent the Seven Deadly Sins.
However, there could be multiple characters per sin, and vice versa. Feel free to add more.
  • Pride:
    • The Podestà, whose fervent, fascist patriotism drives him to do terrible things.
    • Sebastian J. Cricket, who is focused primarily on getting his own memoirs published (he grows out of it, though.)
  • Envy: Spazzatura, who becomes jealous of Pinocchio for being the new star of the carnival. He grows out of it, though.
  • Sloth: The Black Rabbits, who love playing cards more than anything else.
  • Greed: Count Volpe, who is primarily motivated by money and fame.
  • Gluttony: The Terrible Dogfish, who will attempt to consume any living thing it sees.
  • Wrath:
    • The Podestà, who firmly believes that War Is Glorious, is obsessed with creating the perfect child soldiers, and is also abusive to his son.
    • Mussolini, who kills a puppet child and burns down the carnival after being insulted.
  • Lust:
    • Geppetto, not in the sexual sense, but in the "craving something immaterial" sense. He is The Perfectionist, and his desire for perfection from everything around him, including Pinocchio's behavior, makes him stubborn and cranky. He grows out of it, though.
    • Pinocchio himself, in the "craving something immaterial" sense again. He starts out as a bit of a Thrill Seeker. He just wants to do anything that sounds new and exciting, no matter how much Geppetto, Sebastian, or anyone else tries to warn him not to do it. Needless to say, he definitely grows out of it. A big part of his Character Development involves him learning to put aside his own wants and start thinking about the needs of others.

After having Pinocchio shot and the carnival burned, Mussolini also had Count Volpe and anyone else still working for the carnival arrested.

  • Mussolini didn't know that Pinocchio went off-script. For all he knew, Count Volpe could have been planning the insulting performance all along. It seems awfully generous for a dictator to burn Volpe's carnival and then just let Volpe walk away. It would make sense if Mussolini at least tried to have Volpe arrested. Volpe would have escaped with Spazzatura's help. This would give Volpe even more motivation to seek revenge on Pinocchio.

Candlewick not only survived the attack on the army camp, but he also grew up to oppose Mussolini and become an anti-war advocate.
  • It's left ambiguous as to whether Candlewick survived the attack, but he's shown to have survived the explosion that killed his father. After realizing the horrors of war, Candlewick would join the number of coalitions and groups that opposed Mussolini's regime within Italy, or may have even joined an overseas anti-fascist organization at some point. Given that the movie takes place in Fascist Italy, which remained in power from 1922 to 1943, and the Second World War lasted from 1939 to 1945, it seems that the film's story takes place in the 1940s, and while it's not made clear how much time passes between Pinocchio's family going home and Gepetto's death, its quite possible that Candlewick lived to adulthood by then and could have established a full life. It's even possible that he and Pinocchio could cross paths again at some point.
