In #5 of the original manga, Lovelock mentioned how his associates managed to reverse-engineer and replicate Greenpeace, the living air scrubber, so before the start of the Conflict series, the system was deployed in a more practical form en masse worldwide and got rid of the bacterial cloud problem.
