Those Who Remain is a Horror Adventure Game by Camel 101, the makers of Syndrome. It was released on May 28, 2020 for PC through Steam, and will be released on Xbox One and PS4 on July 10th, 2020.
Edward, a married resident of the small town of Dormont, drives to a motel just outside of town to break up with his secret mistress. Upon arrival, he finds the motel abandoned in a hurry, with the last resident stealing his car and fleeing in panic while he's busy trying to find his mistress. As he attempts to make his way back to town on foot, Edward soon finds himself under attack from shadowy figures with glowing eyes that lurk in the darkness, and only by remaining in the light can he remain safe.
As you explore various locations in attempt to progress forward and find an answer to what's going on, you need to manipulate light sources to make progress through the darkness, and also have the ability to explore a supernatural parallel dimension where you will have to manipulate objects to make changes in the real world.
Those Who Remain contains examples of:
- Asshole Victim: It's revealed Edward was thinking about murdering his mistress to conceal their affair. This is why the demon dragged him into the ordeal in the first place.
- Invincible Boogeymen: The searchlight-headed monster serves as your primary active enemy in the game, patrolling certain areas and chasing you if it spots you. You have no combat capabilities (despite being shown carrying a pistol in the opening scene), and can only avoid or run away from it.
- Multiple Endings: The game has three different endings, "Good", "Bad", and "Nightmare", based on how many of the townspeople you choose to condemn. Condemn even one person gives you the Bad ending, while condemning everyone gives you the Nightmare ending, with the demon even chiding you for your extreme ruthlessness.
- Shout-Out:
- The siren from Silent Hill makes an appearance in the first hour of the game.
- One of the items you can find while exploring is a string of Christmas lights. A similar string made a notable appearance in another game with enemies that are weakened by light.
- Weakened by the Light: The shadowy figures cannot appear in light, and will kill you if you step into the darkness.
