''Detective Grimoire'' is a game about the titular detective, solving the mystery of a murdered janitor at a circus and in the second game, a murder at a swamp.
* ArtShift: The first game is very much an {{Animesque}} VisualNovel, complete with characters communicating entirely in grunts and electronic buzzing (much in the style of its [[Franchise/AceAttorney source of inspiration]]) - the background and tone are bleak and realistic, in-keeping with the Creepy Horror aesthetic. The sequel, on the other hand, has a much more quirky and colourful approach of European WesternAnimation (á la ''[[WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfKells Cartoon]] [[WesternAnimation/SongOfTheSea Saloon]]''), with stylised (and animated) character models, full voice acting and lush hand-drawn backgrounds.
* GenreShift: The first game is a creepy Suspense Mystery with horror elements and traces of humour, whereas the sequel is a light-hearted Comedy Adventure Mystery with elements of Suspense and traces of horror.
* RunningGag: The hat, whether absent or not.
** "Your moustache is troubling me. That thing seems to be longer every time I see you."
* KilledOffForReal: The murder victims, naturally.
* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: The events of the two games take place either in Britain or in the US. Officer James wears a British uniform and talks in an English dialect, the toilet is labelled "W.C."[[note]]water closet, used in the UK but not in the US[[/note]], and the price signs of the first game's fair all carry '£' symbols. Yet, Grimoire speaks in a ([[OohMeAccentsSlipping fake]]) American accent in the second game, as does half of the cast. It helps that the game was made in England.
* EveryoneIsASuspect: Naturally, it is a whodunit after all. the only person not a suspect is yourself, the little girl and Officer James.
* TheSummation: Every good mystery has one and you as the player have to piece everything together at the end
* FairPlayWhodunnit: fits this trope to a T
* WhoMurderedTheAsshole [[spoiler: you find out that both victims were not pleasant people.]]
** [[spoiler: The first victum hugh was a very lazy and unagreeable old man who was half deaf, he did not get along with anyone at his work and left the funhouse he was in charge of in ruins]]
** [[spoiler: Remmington seems fine at first but as the story goes on it is revealed he is actually part of a Secret hunting society and had stolen the land through a legal loophole since it was protected by law to continue to hunt to the elusive Boggy to add to his cryptid Collection.]]
* PointAndClickMap: hiven to you by the mysterious little girl in both games.
* HyperspaceArsenal: Lampshaded in the second game by both Sally and Grimmoire
** Sally asks where the detective keeps all his stuff and asks if he keeps them in his pockets.
** Grimmoire asks where little keeps putting all her items noting her dress doesn't even have pockets.

* RedHerring: The Fight between Ricky and Charles was set out as a red herring, it even says so in game.
* HallOfMirrors: The crimescene.
* CraggyIslandFunFair: Justified because Jerry says it is made to look this way on purpose to give a creepy feeling.
* HouseOfBrokenMirrors: The mirror next to the body is shattered and broken and it is obvious not all the glass shards are there.
* MirrorMonster: Inverted because [[spoiler: the killer broke the glass to prevent this very trope and being seen by the victim as he inspected the broken mirror]]

[[folder:Main/Second Game]]
* AlliterativeName: Bobby Burle, Boggy's Bog, Edward "Echo" Everstone, Richard Remington, Sally Spears, Vincent Van De Peer.
* AwesomeMcCoolname: Edward Everstone. At least Grimoire likes it.
* ContinuityNod: Several references to the first game are made.
* CryptidEpisode: In the second game, the prime murder suspect is "Boggy," a creature rumored to live in the swamp. [[spoiler:The actual culprit was just someone in a costume, but Boggy ''does'' exist.]]
* SequelHook: The second game end with 'ToBeContinued', tying in with the victim's background story.
* ShoutOut: Detective Grimoire makes a snarky remark about [[Franchise/ProfessorLayton the guy with the top hat]].
** The ghost from VideoGame/HauntTheHouse is seen a few times, and is required for an achievement.
** Show the [[spoiler:missing journal page]] to Agent Folder for an Franchise/IndianaJones [[ItBelongsInAMuseum reference]].
* StylisticSuck: The notebook puzzles feature crude stick figure doodles of the situation Grimoire is trying to solve.
* SwampsAreEvil: Grimoire often goes on about how disgusting and creepy the swamp in while other suspects actually find it rather beautiful. But he does have a point considering the Swamp is the scene of a murder.
* TechnicolorToxin: [[spoiler: The poison used to make Remington ill was a green powder.]]
