BOSSGAME: The Final Boss is My Heart is a Boss Game released in 2023. It stars two lesbians, the church soldier Sophie and the fire mage Anna, as they make rent by hunting the devils in Mammon City.

Tropes:

  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Due to Act 3 ending with a Second-Act Breakup, the final act starts with Anne making amends with Dawn and Dawn taking Sophie's place in a battle against the Sams, fighting with solar power and an umbrella instead of Sophie's lunar power and sword.
  • Blasphemous Boast: During the final boss fight, Anna rebukes Donovan's claims that he's undefeatable upon absorbing the power of Mammon, the god of the sun, by stating that her fire magic burns even brighter.
  • Boss Game: The game is a linear sequence of fights against unique bosses, intermixed with dialogue between the main characters and their opponent or the occasional news report covering the rival electoral campaigns of Donovan and Churchmother Adelaine.
  • Boss Rush: One of the bonuses unlocked for beating the game is the option to challenge every fight back-to-back and see how far you can get, and how quickly, without perishing.
  • Capitalism Is Bad: Donovan, the politician campaigning against the Church, is also a wealthy capitalist who plans to replace the church's soldiers with his own personal military of "Sam" robots. His boss fight in the final act includes attacking with dollar signs and stock market arrows, with particularly rough attacks also broadcasted with anticapitalism quotes like "Recessions are caused by speculative greed and they will happen again" and "If you have a CEO you should have a union".
  • Corrupt Church: It turns out that the "devils" are just beings that oppose the church's goals and are transformed into monsters for true acolytes to gain strength from fighting. Sophie is aghast to learn from Adelaine that the mark she was given upon being accepted into the church will turn her into a devil herself if she's disobedient, though she still hesitates actually fighting back until weeks and a pep talk from Mirra later.
  • Creator Cameo: At the end of Act 3, the avatar of developer Lily Valeen appears to talk with the player and offer them a break after the recent drama.
  • Dual Boss: Most bosses in the game are fought as Sophie and Anna against their enemies, but the second fight of the final act has Sophie fighting by herself and swapping between the left and right positions as she overcomes her dark reflection.
  • Evil Versus Evil: As evil as the Corrupt Church turns out to be, its biggest detractor Donovan is a self-centered tyrant who ends up taking over Mammon City after Churchmother Adelaide is knocked out fighting Sophie and Anna, leading to the girls going after him as well in the final act.
  • Fallen Hero: One of the fights in Act 3 is Mirra, a friend of Sophie's from the church that has become a Horned Humanoid devil upon doubting the church's goals, and ends up fighting Sophie and Anna when they refuse to let her simply run away and abandon the life she's built up. It's later subverted when the church does turn out to be evil and Sophie ends up going to Mirra for help after the Second-Act Breakup.
  • Final Boss, New Dimension: In the final phase of the final boss fight, God-King Donovan elevates the fight from his tower to space itself, with Sophie and Anna drifting back down through the atmosphere afterwards and then crashing back onto the planet.
  • A God Am I: In the final act, Donovan uses the body of Churchmother Adelaine and a mass sacrifice of his Sams to connect with the god Mammon and become a self-proclaimed God-King.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Dawn and Mirra are both first encountered as boss fights before helping Sophie and Anna in the final act. Omeghost, Ultimouth, and Emily also all show up during the raid on Donovan's tower, with Emily stating that Arborgeddon would've also been there if he wasn't so old and also an immobile tree.
  • Horned Humanoid: Some devils look like completely normal humans aside from a pair of horns. These devils include Mirra, who initially tries to hide them with a hoodie, and Sophie in the final act after accepting the reality of her situation.
  • I Owe You My Life: Sophie owes her life to Churchmother Adelaine, and is willing to risk her life fighting demons in order to repay her kindness. It forms a rift between her and Anna when Adelaine is proven to be evil and tries to kill Sophie and Anne but Sophie can't bring herself to fight back against her.
  • Knight Templar: The church has a slay-on-sight policy towards devils, even when the devils first try to establish communications.
  • Meaningful Name: All of the Devils have a name that's indicative of how they fight, such as Ultimouth using a lot of biting attacks, and Mirra reflecting attacks with a magic mirror.
  • One-Winged Angel: The final boss fight against Donovan is first against his security system, then Donovan himself, and then Donovan controlling Mammon like a puppet.
  • Pair the Spares: In the final act, while helping prepare for the raid against Donovan's forces, Anne's ex-girlfriend Dawn is properly introduced to Sophie's friend Mirra and starts flirting with her.
  • Second-Act Breakup: Third Act, in this case; Sophie's loyalty to Adelaine makes her flee from the fight against her, abandoning Anne in the process, even after overwhelming evidence that Adelaine is evil. Anne is heartbroken by this betrayal and the act ends with her leaving while Sophie stays behind to protect Adelaine from Donovan's Sams units. They make up midway through the next, final Act after Sophie confronts her true emotions and reaches out to make amends.
  • Solar and Lunar: Anna is a Fire Mage whose magic is represented by the sun, and Sophie is a soldier of the church whose magic is represented by the moon.
  • Turns Red: All of the fights have the enemy's Health Meter displayed, and they tend to use more dangerous attacks as it goes down from a full green to a damaged orange and critical red. This includes Arborgeddon, who's otherwise a Zero-Effort Boss.
  • Zero-Effort Boss: Arborgeddon, the last of the Mega Devils that's fought in Act 3, is an immobile tree that spends a significant portion of the fight doing nothing after trying to convince Sophie and Anna that they're just people deemed outcasts by Sophie's god than an intentionally malevolent force.
