** Fire Ships are available to every civilizations, yet are based on the Byzantine use of Greek Fire in maritime combat, and its composition was a state secret.

I should really push for a supertrope being added for Mechanically Unusual X.

Added DiffLines:

* MechanicallyUnusualClass: Downplayed. All civilizations have roughly similar tech trees and share the same basic gameplay rhythm. Civilization bonuses are relatively modest, and individually fall mostly under "nice to have". However, there are a handful of civilizations that stand out for being unusual:
** The ''Age of Kings'' civilizations are all fairly homogenous -- aside from the Goths, whose trademark ability is being able to churn out their unique Huskarl unit at incredible rates thanks to the combination of being able to significantly increase Barracks production speeds and unlocking the ability to train their Huskarls from them, instead of just Castles.
** Among ''The Conquerors'' civilizations, the Huns stand out for being the only civilization to not have to build Houses, and do not, in fact, have access to them.
** The Mesoamerican civilizations (the Mayans, Aztecs and Incans) do not have access to Stables and can only produce cavalry if they convert an enemy Stable (and Mayans can't even do that). Instead, they have access to the Eagle Warrior unit, a very fast infantry unit that fills roughly the same niche as Light Cavalry.
** ''Lords of the West'' added the Sicilian civilization, whose unique unit is the Serjeant. The Serjeant can build Donjons, defensive structures that are stronger than Towers but weaker than Castles and can produce more Serjeants.

** Thumb rings for archers date back to the Neolithic period, which would be far from the castle-age tech the game makes it to be.

** Some of the unique units are either not unique to that civilization, or do not belong to their particular civilization. For example the Goths' Huskarl is a Norse/Saxon title. The Huns' noble unit, the Tarkan, is a mongol or turk title. Mamelukes were used by several Muslim regimes in history, not only the Saracens. Cataphracts were used by a wide variety of nations, not just the Byzantines.

A lord would have only one or a handful of champions, not armies of them.
** The militia line in general features this heavily. Men-at-arms should be cavalry and longswordsmen should be using 2 handed swords (Despite how fantasy and videogames have popularized it, longswords historically refer to swords who are primarily used two handed).
** The Mangonel bares no similarity to its historical counterpart, which is a type of trebuchet operated with pullcords rather than counter-weights. Mangonels were static and unlike their in-game model didn't use torsion. Also if going by European timelines, the Onager would predate the Mangonel in Europe, rather than the other way around.

** Some of the events depicted in the campaigns [[AlternateHistory are inaccurate with history]], especially for a game that prides itself on being an EdutainmentGame. But the campaigns [[ShaggyDogStory wouldn't be nearly as fun if they ended in failure]], and it's clear that the developers [[ShownTheirWork know that many aspects are inaccurate.]]
