Gavin Christopher Newsom (born October 10, 1967) is an American politician who is the 40th governor of the state of California, serving since 2019. He previously served as Lt. Governor of California from 2011 to 2019 to Jerry Brown and the mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.
His father was state appeals judge William Newsom and his mother is Tessa Thomas Menzies. He was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle, is currently married to Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and he has four children with Siebel. He is also a distant relative of the musician Joanna Newsom.
In 2021, Newsom became the second govenor of California to face a recall election, after Gray Davis in 2003. Reasons for the recall included criticisms of how the governor handled the COVID-19 Pandemic, particularly the (relatively) tight restrictions, and perceptions that he violated his own guidelines. Unlike Davis in the previous recall election, Newsom would easily defeat the recall by double digits, with multiple outlets declaring his victory less than an hour after the polls closed, and he easily won re-election the following year.
