Trivia / Unorthodox

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Jeff Wilbusch, who plays Moische Lefkovitch, was raised in an orthodox Hasidic family. He however left when he was thirteen.
  • Dawson Casting: Esty is 19 at the start of the series. Shira Haas was 24.
    • Notably, Shira Haas' small size has allowed her to portray several younger roles in other films.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Shira Haas shaved her head for the leading role.
  • Falsely Advertised Accuracy:
    • The publicity for the series said that it was the first work to give us a real look into the world of Hasidism. But at least three articles by women who left the Hasidism said that the show's portrayal of the Hasidic world is a "Grossly Inaccurate" caricature—both in the details it gets wrong (such as the rules relating to the eruv wire), and in the overall portrayal and atmosphere (they said that although the community is oppressive, it isn't utterly joyless and miserable all the time, and the women who can afford it dress quite stylishly).
    • The series is also not the first to depict Hasidic lifestyle. Earlier films such as Ushpizin, Fill the Void and Kadosh also centered on Hasidic families, with varying degrees of positivity.
  • Very Loosely Based on a True Story: Loosely based on Deborah Feldman's Memoir Unorthodox...which itself has drawn numerous accusations from those who knew Feldman that it was at best grossly exaggerated.
