• Word of God: The author, TheOtherRed, has made a few responses to comments on the fic elaborating on details that aren't entirely clear in the text:
  • Mari does have an official autism diagnosis but the story avoids mentioning it to reflect her ableism. Both the ableism and her mother's emotional abuse stem from the harmful attitudes towards autism common to the time period.
  • Sunny is more talkative than in canon because he isn't traumatized, and isn't limited to being a Heroic Mime.
  • Explaining what Sunny and Mari meant to say with some of their cut-off sentences during their argument.
  • Mari was diagnosed autistic when she was in the range of 3-4 years old, when Sunny was a baby, and her parents suspected she was because she didn't act like a "normal" child.
• Write What You Know: The fic's depiction of autism is based on TheOtherRed being autistic themselves, with the author's notes and comments readily admitting that many of Mari's symptoms and habits are based on them projecting their own experience with the condition.
