Trivia / Throne of Glass

Go To

  • Breakthrough Hit: The first book and the series as a whole was this for Sarah J Maas. The original version, Queen of Glass, was already highly popular on FictionPress, and garnered enough attention that Maas decided to rewrite and formally publish it. Throne of Glass proved to be a big hit and helped establish Maas as a successful novelist.
  • Development Hell: In 2016 it was announced that Hulu was adapting the books into a television series, titled Queen of Shadows after the fourth book. Sarah J. Maas shared a photo of the pilot script in December 2016, but there's been no news since, with it being rumored the project has been outright cancelled.
  • Inspiration for the Work: The author was inspired to write the first novel after listening to a piece of music from Cinderella and deeming it way too intense for the scene it was used for, deciding a thief or an assassin fleeing the palace would fit the score better. The original version of the story, Queen of Glass, stuck more closely to the Cinderella tale, although this lessened after the story was reworked into Throne of Glass.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Quite a few things were changed between the writing of the original draft Queen of Glass (uploaded to FictionPress in 2003) and the writing of what became Throne of Glass:
      • Queen of Glass was told in three parts, while the Throne of Glass series was expanded to seven books plus a collection of short stories (the plot of Queen of Glass roughly corresponds to the first four books).
      • Queen of Glass ended with Celaena being paired with Dorian, while in the final version she ends up with Rowan, she and Dorian break up early on, and Dorian ends up falling in love with Manon.
      • Nehemia was named Anuksan and Rowan was named Raaon.
    • Tower of Dawn was originally intended to be a novella, before being expanded into a full-length novel.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: In regards to Celaena's love life. Maas stated in this interview that who Celaena would end up with wasn't set in stone right from the start. By Queen of Shadows, she decided to pair her with Rowan (which is a notable deviation from the earlier version of the story, where she ends up with Dorian).
