• California Doubling: Averted. The movie is set in Oklahoma, and was actually filmed in the state (including in areas affected by the May 1999 F5 tornado that destroyed much of Moore and southern Oklahoma City).
• Dawson Casting: 19-year-old Maddy was played by Sofia Vassilieva, who was 28 at the time of filming. Thora Birch playing Maddy's mother Jess results in a case of Underage Casting, as Birch (born 1982) is only ten years older than Vassilieva (born 1992). Granted it's established that Jess gave birth to Maddy as a teen (presumably around Maddy's age), but the age difference between the two actresses is a bit too close compared to those of real-life teen parents and their late-teenage/young adult children.
• Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: Shaylee Mansfield is deaf, like her character, Peyton.
• Irony as She Is Cast: Anne Heche was part of one of the first high-profile same-sex relationships in Hollywood, when she dated Ellen Degeneres from 1997 to 2000, and was a proud supporter of LGBTQ rights.^note As she stated in one interview, all of the other romantic relationships Heche had during her life were with men, including her two subsequent marriages with photographer Coleman Laffoon and actor James Tupper (the latter of whom she met when they worked on the 2006–08 ABC dramedy series Men in Trees) In the film, her character, Tammy, is an ultra-conservative who opposes homosexuality, and disowns her son Luke for being gay.
