• Creator Backlash:
  • David Duchovny expressed his dislike for the episode; he found it difficult to perform opposite his then-girlfriend Perrey Reeves and wondered about the credibility of Mulder's actions towards Kristen: "Why do I let her shave me, for God's sake?"
  • Glen Morgan admitted that it was one of the only two episodes he and James Wong wrote for The X-Files (the other being "Shadows") that disappointed him. Morgan attributed it both to being a rewrite of another writer's script (Chris Ruppenthal wrote the original draft, which Chris Carter had deemed unsatisfactory) and that he and Wong were writing it at the same time as they were preparing "One Breath" and couldn't put their usual amount of care into the script.
• Executive Meddling: Fox forced the writers to heavily tone down the original script's sexual content; James Wong recalls one executive telling him that "On FOX, we don't have kinky sex."
