- Actor Allusion: In the Soviet adaptation, the rat chief has very Hitler-like appearance and manners. The actor voicing it, Sergey Martinson, had played the guy three times.
- Cross-Dressing Voices: Nils is played by a woman, Mami Koyama, in the '80s anime version.
- He Also Did: The anime was the debut production for Studio Pierrot (not to mention an early credit for a then-unknown Mamoru Oshii), but - The Mysterious Cities of Gold (which used many of the same staff, minus Oshii) notwithstanding - most of their future work would not be in this same World Masterpiece Theater-esque Western literary genre.
