• Inspiration for the Work: The authoress mentions in a comment on AO3 that she got the idea for the fic after she discovered Judith Newman's controversial Autism parent memoir To Siri With Love and the justified negative reactions from autistic people, and wanted to explore how an autistic person in the child's shoes would actually feel if they found out their parent actually wanted to sterilize them without their consent.
• Word of God: The author mentioned several details about the story in the AO3 comment section:
  • Mary won't be meeting the Apex.
  • Mr. Fitzpatrick (Dana's father) died before the events of the story, explaining why Irene is on her own.
• What Could Have Been:
  • SaoirseParisa was originally going to explain Greg's behavior by him thinking his parents favored his autistic older sister. However, the author had already used the "character acts out because they think their autistic sibling is loved more" explanation in two previous stories of hers and didn't want it to become a cliche. As a result, she changed it to Greg emulating a jerk character in a video game he plays in an attempt to impress his friends. This element would later be reused for Nora's backstory however, though she has an autistic younger brother instead.
  • Chapter 12 was initially going to consist of both Mary’s journey into her memories and Todd and Reagan confronting Dana about her blog. But due to the intensity of the former, the latter was moved to Chapter 13, thus making Chapter 12 the only chapter that’s solely focused on Mary in the Train.
  • Chapter 21 was initially going to be two chapters.
