Trivia / The Sopranos S 4 E 9 Whoever Did This

Go To

  • Acting in the Dark: Chase wouldn’t tell Pantoliano if Ralphie had set the fire or not, or lied to him according to some accounts. Pantoliano decided to play the scene as if he hadn’t, as if he were innocent.
  • Life Imitates Art: Jason Bautista was convicted of killing his mentally ill mother in Riverside, California, on January 14, 2003, then dumping her decapitated body with its hands removed off Ortega Highway in Orange County. Jason's half-brother, Matthew Montejo, who was 15 years old when Jason killed their mother, testified in court that he helped dispose of her body, and that they got the idea to chop off her head and hands to hide the crime from this episode.
  • Throw It In!:
    • James Gandolfini, while in the middle of playing Tony Soprano who just killed off Ralph Cifaretto for good, actually did burn his hand on the still turned on gas stove and yelped in pain in response. It was decided that the real thing was so good and believable that it should be kept in the final cut of the episode.
    • Christopher's pronounciation of "I did-ent!" when Tony accuses him of having used heroin was an actual flub by Michael Imperioli but was kept in because it helped make Christopher look stoned. The look of chagrin on Imperioli's face is real.
  • Word of God: David Chase has said his intent for the episode was that Ralph had indeed set the fire which killed Pie-O-My.
  • Word of St. Paul: Conversely, Joe Pantoliano has said he played his final scene as if Ralph was innocent and stills believes so.
