Trivia / The Simpsons S6 E6 "Treehouse of Horror V"

Go To

  • Blooper: When Bart and Lisa run to Marge to tell her about the school cafeteria cooking kids, the two of them switch places between shots.
  • Deleted Scene:
    • In "The Shinning", Bart encounters Sherri and Terri as the ghosts of the previous caretaker's daughters. Bart is skateboarding in the halls, not noticing the assorted ghouls looming behind him when he turns a corner, and sees Sherri and Terri, who sing, "Your father's gonna kill you!" Bart then sees Patty and Selma, who tell him, "They're right, y'know."
    • A brief one in "Time and Punishment", where just after Homer learns Ned Flanders is the unquestioned lord and master of the world, Bart and Lisa fill him in.
Lisa: He's created a near-perfect society, where there's no crime, hunger or war, and all have access to the lively arts.
Homer: If that's your world, I don't wanna live in it!
    • In the scene where the Simpsons' house changes into various things, one of the original designs was the house made entirely of squirrels. The layout artist who designed it worked on the drawings for more than two days, but ultimately it was cut because the details would not have shown up clearly in TV resolutions of the time. To make sure their work did not go to waste, some staff members have used the drawings on Christmas cards and other studio-related notices.
    • In an alternate future, the Simpsons have a teenage son named Roy. Matt Groening said that "somebody from outside the show" originally suggested the idea. The joke was later used as a sub-plot for "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show", even though Roy was a lodger, rather than a son.
    • Originally, instead of Kang & Kodos being turned into Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Homer's time travelling would've caused the planet to develop a giant boxing glove on a spring, which would've punched their ship. Which also explains why the Earth looks a little different in the finished episode.
    • In "Nightmare Cafeteria", after Skinner tastes the Grade F Meat liquid that spills on Jimbo, Lunchlady Doris does as well.
    • Sherri and Terri get cooked as "Teriyaki" steak with a "Sherry" sauce.
    • Homer regales Lisa about his dream of eating Milhouse.
  • Executive Meddling: The "first non-Brazilian to travel through time" line was originally "non-fictional", but a network executive changed it for unknown reasons.
  • Refitted for Sequel: One Bad Future had the Simpsons have a teenage son named Roy. The character later appeared as a house guest of the Simpsons in "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show."
  • Spared by the Cut: Sherri and Terri were going to be killed in the "Nightmare Cafeteria" sequence, but can be seen still alive in the "free range children" pen by the time Bart, Lisa and Millhouse try to escape.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In "The Shinning", Mr. Burns mentions his lodge was home to John Denver Christmas specials. At the storyboard stage, John Denver would have in fact appeared, having been stuck in the hedge maze since the 70s, something Willie was aware of and just didn't care about. Come Homer's "Here's Johnny!" moment, one of the failed attempts would have had him stumbling upon Denver, singing about how he got out of the hedge maze.
    • According to David X. Cohen, Homer was going to appear in the "Nightmare Cafeteria", responding to Bart and Lisa's concerns about the teachers killing and eating children with "mmm, children". When called on this by his horrified children, Homer states that "unfortunately, there are laws we must obey as human beings, but I have my dreams". Most of these involve killing and cooking Milhouse, including writing a book of Milhouse recipes (the one Mrs. Krabappel was reading in the finished episode), which he even mentions having shown to Milhouse's parents, not understanding why they didn't respond well to it.
    • One of the proposed ideas for "Nightmare Cafeteria" was Sherri and Terri being served as "Terri-aki steak with Sherri sauce."
    • In "Time and Punishment", Homer would have discovered from one alternate timeline that there was an annoying teenage son named Roy. The joke was reworked for Season 8's "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show", where Roy inexplicably stayed with The Simpsons as a parody of the Remember the New Guy? trope and a parody of how TV shows add on Totally Radical characters in a desperate attempt to stay relevant to the times.
    • Homer's line about being "the first non-Brazilian person to travel through time" was originally "non-fictional" instead. Matt Groening disliked the change, as he thought the original line was hilarious and he didn't understand what the replacement was a reference to.
  • Writer Revolt: Showrunner David Mirkin specifically wanted the episode to be Bloodier and Gorier in response to Congress's complaints about violence in the show, and attempting to censor it. This also influenced the opening segment.
