• Reality Subtext: Bernard Cornwell was adopted at infancy and later took his mother's surname. In his middle-age he tracked down his father's family, surnamed Oughtred — who claimed descent from Anglo-Saxon noblemen of Bamburgh, Northumbria. Uhtred is meant to be a fictionalized ancestor.
