* AcclaimedFlop:
** In the US at least. It received very strong reviews for an animated film in 2012, even having a higher RottenTomatoes rating than Pixar's film that year, yet is Aardman's lowest-grossing film in the U.S. to date. Opening sandwiched between Film/TheHungerGames and Film/TheAvengers probably didn't help its cause much either...
** Nor did featuring CharlesDarwin as a character in a country with widespread Christian values.
* AllStarCast: Pretty much everyone with a speaking part is voiced by somebody big in the UK.
* ExecutiveMeddling: Dear lord.
** Besides the title change, the American release cuts out a few of the more risque jokes and redubs the Albino Pirate's lines with Anton Yelchin for apparently no reason.
** This was also the movie that caused WesternAnimation/FlushedAway to end up being released in 2006 as it was planned that the next movie after WesternAnimation/ChickenRun would be a pirate movie. Creator/DreamWorks nicked it claiming at the time, they weren't marketable.

** The Albino Pirate is George Sands in the UK and Chekov in the US.
** And Brian Blessed is...Brian Blessed
* TechnologyMarchesOn: Aardman previously switched WesternAnimation/FlushedAway to an AllCGICartoon due to the amount of water required. Come the announcement of a stop-motion film, and there's a lot of water to be seen.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The project was originally envisioned as an AllCGICartoon, but when Sony executives saw the models of the Pirate Captain and his cabin that had been created as references for the animators, they requested that it be made in stop-motion.
** An early version of the film would have followed the plot of the book much more closely. The Bishop of Oxford was going to be the main villain, and Polly would have belonged to a minor character instead of the Pirate Captain.
** Some concept art included an additional crew member, the Pirate in Green, who went unused.
** At one point, Surprisingly Curvaceous Pirate was going to be black.
