• Disowned Adaptation: Sort of. Robert Shaw disliked Edward Anhalt's original screenplay because he felt Anhalt added too much of an emotional dimension to his play, and requested that his name be taken off the credits. However, Shaw was actually quite impressed with the finished film, feeling that Arthur Hiller's direction (and Maximilian Schell's performance) emphasized nuances in the story that weren't apparent in Anhalt's script, and even asked to have his name re-added. By that time, however, the film's prints were already being prepared, and Shaw's name was never reinstated.
