- Follow the Leader: The film was hastily greenlit following the success of Rocky, which sparked a whole trend of boxing films in the 70s and early 80s. They had been trying to get it made for three years, but Rocky's success convinced Ali to finally agree to it.
- Friendship on the Set: Ernest Borgnine became very close with Muhammad Ali during filming. The latter even cried when he saw the former's character weep in one scene.
- What Could Have Been:
- Muhammad Ali's first wife Sonji Roy declined to allow herself to be represented in the film, and so her persona was replaced with a fictional girlfriend stand-in.
- Lonette McKee was slated to play Belinda but left the project reportedly after she was expected to share her dressing room with other actors, and opted to star in the Richard Pryor film Which Way Is Up?, being replaced with Annazette Chase.
