• Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Kan'ichi is widely thought by the fandom to say "this night of this month next year, I'll blot out the moon with my tears" during the memetic beach break-up. This is exclusive to adaptations and he doesn't say this in the book; while he does talk about blotting out the moon, the wording is different and the speech is much longer.
• Died During Production: The original novel's run was left unfinished from Ozaki's death in 1903. The ending written by his student is generally considered canon.
