Trivia / The Colour Out of Space

Go To

  • Creator's Favorite Episode: While The Call of Cthulhu remains his most well-known work, Lovecraft considered The Colour out of Space to be his personal favorite.
  • Life Imitates Art: In 2007 several people fell ill after a meteorite crashed near a small village in Peru. The cause was determined to be arsenic poisoning from the meteorite breaking open a natural arsenic deposit. The Colour's meteor disturbing a vein of poisonous minerals is one of the explanations initially suspected for the Gardeners and their livestock's strange symptoms.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: Of a sort. Going by how well known his works are, The Call of Cthulhu is definitely his most known, in large part due to internet memes and Cthulhu being put into all sorts of board games, shows, etc. Lovecraft, however, considered The Colour Out Of Space to be his favorite of his stories. Subverted in that among the people who have already read Lovecraft's work usually agree Cthulhu is not his best, and is mainly best known due to Pop-Cultural Osmosis. Many fans do see The Colour Out of Space to be his best, or at least one of them.
  • Reality Subtext: Lovecraft's grandfather, Whipple Van Buren Phillips, invested in a failed dam project, causing the loss the family fortune and eventually his life as a result of the stress. This no doubt had something to do with the inclusion of the Framing Device about the reservoir surveyor.
    • Lovecraft himself noted that it was in part inspired by the Scituate Reservoir, which did involve the flooding of several towns to provide a drinking water supply.
