• California Doubling: While the exterior scenes of the movie were generally filmed on-location in Holland, the interior scenes were filmed in an American apartment.
• Dawson Casting: At the time of production, the age range for male LDS missionaries was 19 to 25 years old. While K.C. Clyde (Elder Rogers) and Cameron Hopkin (Elder Van Pelt) both fit into this range, being 23 at time of release, Kirby Heyborne (Elder Calhoun) was 26 and David Nibley (Elder Johnson) was 29.
• Self-Adaptation: Anderson adapted his own stage play The Best Two Years of My Life into the movie.
