  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • Amy is mentioned to be of Honduran descent in season 2 ("Olympics"), like her actress America Ferrera.
    • In season 5, Cheyenne and Matteo theorize that Dina is a serial killer and responsible for the severed feet. In real life, Lauren Ash has a True Crime-podcast called ‎True Crime & Cocktails.
      • In season 1, Glenn tells Dina that her Podcast is awful and nobody likes it.
  • The Character Died with Him: Myrtle dies off-screen in mid-season 5 due to the death of her actress in real life.
  • The Danza: Kelly Stables who plays Kelly.
  • Dawson Casting: Cheyenne and Bo are supposed to be in high school at the start of the show, but Nichole Bloom was in her mid 20s and Johnny Pemberton was in his mid 30s when they began playing the characters.
  • Descended Creator: Series creator Justin Spitzer appears in the last two episodes as a Cloud 9 customer.
  • Died During Production: Myrtle's actress, Linda Porter, passed away in 2019.
  • Directed by Cast Member: America Ferrera directed four episodes, Ben Feldman directed two episodes, and Mark Mckinney directed one episode.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Lauren Ash confirmed on social media that those were real tears in Dina's last scene with Glenn in the series finale.
  • Fake American: Australian Josh Lawson plays pharmacist Tate, and Canadians Mark McKinney and Lauren Ash play Glenn and Dina.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine:
  • Out of Order: "Olympics" aired well after the season 1 finale, during the actual 2016 Summer Olympics, but narratively fits somewhere into the middle of season 1 - for example, Cheyenne is still pregnant, and the Cloud 9 employees haven't gone on strike yet. Some on-screen TV guides listed it as "Season 2, Episode 1" even though it wasn't billed as a season premiere.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Nico Santos (Mateo) is openly gay, like his character.
    • George Salazar is gay, and plays Eric, who is also gay.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Amy's increasing good rep with corporate in Season 5 was the result of America Ferrera considering leaving the show. This plot thread ultimately culminated in a job offer in California after Ferrera decided to leave; the writers acknowledged that there were several ways that plot line could have gone depending on her decision.
Jonathan Green: [W]e had other things that could have come out of Amy getting more and more noticed by corporate, which we had set in motion early in the season with district manager Maya coming in and noticing her, and putting in a good word for her at corporate and talking about the possibility of advancement. Even Amy getting the profile written about her in the “Zephra Cares” episode… all of that could have led to Amy getting attention from corporate in a way that didn’t necessarily involve [that].
    • Season 6 takes place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and much of the season is dedicated to the effects of the pandemic on retail stores. The Cloud 9 staff must juggle confusing safety regulations, panicked customers, quarantines, supply shortages potential and actual infections on top of their "normal" absurdities. All of which is truth in television.
  • Written by Cast Member: Lauren Ash (Dina) wrote "Gender Reveal" in Season 3, and Colton Dunn (Garrett) wrote "Forced Hire" in Season 5 and "Conspiracy" in Season 6
  • Written-In Infirmity: Amy getting pregnant again was the result of the actress's real life pregnancy.
