- Character Development: The episode represents a turning point for Worf's character. Up until that episode Worf had been portrayed as more of a brute, but the episode was the start of the development of Worf into a complex individual. Worf's handling of the bat'leth was a highly ritualistic martial art which had been developed by Worf actor Michael Dorn and martial arts expert Dan Curry.
- First Appearance:
- Robert O'Reilly makes his first appearance as Gowron, a role he would play through TNG and into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
- The Vor'cha-class battle cruiser, which would become a mainstay of Klingon fleets, makes it debut here as well.
- The Bat'leth shows up in the episode for the first time. Initially presented as a rather uncommon weapon- when Worf goes to battle Duras, Duras uses a regular curved sword- eventually it would become the weapon of choice for the entire Klingon empire.
- Prop Recycling: One of the spiked cesti from "Code of Honor" appears in Worf's room among a display of Klingon weaponry. It's a little fuzzy whether it's supposed to be another Klingon weapon or it's the very cestus used by Yar, kept by Worf as a memento of her.
- You Look Familiar: Robert O'Reilly previously appeared as a character in Picard's Dixon Hill holoprogram in "Manhunt."
