  • The Cameo: Character actor Jon Lormer, as the Old Man who provides the episode Title Drop.
  • Deleted Role: According to a call sheet, Dick Geary appeared as a security guard in this episode, but it seems his appearance ended up as a deleted scene.
  • Prop Recycling:
    • The prop used as Book of the People is the same one used as Chicago Mobs of the Twenties in "A Piece of the Action".
    • The metal helical staircase is recycled from "The Empath".
    • Kirk even mentions how the Master Computer room is remarkably like the equipment on the Enterprise.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In an early story outline, it was Scotty who was ill.
    • Bones and Natira. Jim points out that they'll be close to the World of the Promise in about a year and Bones can visit her there. Fans immediately picked up on the idea of their reunion. "Are You Married, Dr. McCoy?" by Sandra Miesel (Spockanalia 5, June 1970) satirized Starfleet bureaucratic red tape around the marriage in a series of communications from an increasingly frazzled official (we're left to imagine the good doctor's irascible replies). Eventually, Spock finds out that removal of the Instrument of Obedience constituted a divorce. McCoy concludes: "How the devil do I explain this to Natira? And what makes you think I don’t want to be married?" By Star Trek: The Motion Picture it was assumed that McCoy had retired to the World of the Promise and was called back to the Enterprise from there.note
  • You Look Familiar: Jon Lormer (the Old Man), had previously appeared as Theodore Haskins in "The Cage" and as Tamar in "The Return of the Archons".
