• Deleted Role: DeForest Kelley and James Doohan both had their scenes cut.
• Deleted Scene: After Security Chief Pitcairn enters the hearing room to announce the arrival of McCoy and Scotty, who hurry in to the room. They then report that, by using a spectrograph beam to detect traces of copper salt from Vulcan perspiration, they had managed to determine which of the ship's computer microtapes Spock had affected to lock the Enterprise on a course to Talos IV.
• What Could Have Been: this episode settles the name of Starfleet, although the drafts named it the United Earth Space Probe Agency, which was mentioned in Tomorrow Is Yesterday, and Galactic Command. Starbase 11 was also named Starbase 811
