Trivia / Skyscraper

Go To

  • California Doubling: Outside of a few key exteriors, most of the film's Hong Kong locales were shot in Vancouver and Surrey, B.C.
  • Creator's Oddball: This is director Rawson Marshall Thurber's first foray outside of the comedy genre, though his prior film Central Intelligence did incorporate elements of the spy-action genre.
  • Distanced from Current Events: Although the film was released in the UK around the same time as the rest of the world in summer 2018, there were very few advertisements, and the movie had zero commercial coverage on British TV, and it took until releasing onto store shelves for any kind of commercial to run for the film. This was done due to the films' premise bearing uncomfortable similarities to the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, where kids and families were trapped in a burning skyscraper, so it was considered a good move for the distributor to keep the film on the down-low in the UK, instead of causing tone-deaf upset.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Dwayne Johnson dyeing his beard salt-and-pepper.
  • Playing Against Type: As an amputee with a missing leg, almost everything Will Sawyer does is given some added struggles including relatively simple actions like climbing a ladder with a prosthetic. It makes him notably less invincible than most of Dwayne Johnson's characters.
  • Similarly Named Works: Skyscraper is also the name of a 1996 Direct to Video Anna Nicole Smith film.
  • What Could Have Been: Brad Peyton (who had previously worked with Johnson earlier that year in Rampage) and Roland Emmerich were both considered as director.
