Trivia / Short Circuit 2

• California Doubling: The movie takes place in the USA, but was shot in Toronto. It was rumoured that the crew had to go out of their way to add litter to the shots to maintain to the illusion of an American city, but it kept getting cleaned up by City Services when they were on break.
• Production Posse: Like in the first film, the set of Johnny Five puppeteers have worked together on other projects. Gordon Robertson, Rob Mills, and Trish Leeper were the suit actors for the Gorgs on Fraggle Rock. Robertson and Eric Allard would team up again for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.
• Technology Marches On:
  • In the second movie, when Johnny Five first meets Benjamin, he happily shows off all his newest features, including among them "500 megabytes of storage". 500 MB was indeed a lot of hard drive space in 1988, when Short Circuit 2 was in theaters, but ten years later, we know that Johnny has about enough memory to store a decent but by no means flawless copy of the movie he currently stars in. The Italian adaptation's translation, translated back into English, results in Johnny 5 saying he has "improved memory, 500 megabytes online", without any mention of storage, which leads viewers to think he's talking about RAM instead of hard drive space. Of course, technology has marched on from computers with 512 MB of RAM, but it took a lot more time.
  • Benjamin's lament that neither he nor Fred is carrying a phone.
    Fred: Well, I left mine in the Mercedes!
• What Could Have Been: Steve Guttenberg was asked to reprise his role as Newton Crosby for the second movie but declined. Years later, he openly regretted that decision.
