- Actor Allusion: Mark Umbers, who played Georg in the 2016 revival, was clearly channeling Jimmy Stewart, who played the role in the film adaptation The Shop Around the Corner judging by his mannerisms and occasional mimicking of the latter's voice.
- Cut Song: Played With with “Tango Tragique”, the song that plays in the background at the Cafe Imperiale. In the original production, Georg had a short song to the tune of the Tango that segued into “Mr. Nowack, Will You Please”. In revivals, the lyrics to the song have been cut and rewritten as a monologue, but the clarinet plays the melody that Georg sang.
- What Could Have Been: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer planned to make a film adaptation in the late 1960s, to be directed by Blake Edwards with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the leads. A change in studio ownership killed the project.
