Trivia / Salome (1953)

Go To

  • California Doubling: Surprisingly averted, with the exteriors having been filmed in Israel. Or as the trailer puts it, "You will see a story filmed where it actually happened, in the Holy Land, in color by Technicolor."
  • Dawson Casting: It's not entirely clear how old Salome is supposed to be in this version, but she's presumably meant to be in her teens or, at most, early twenties. Rita Hayworth was in her mid-thirties at the time.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The original ending was more in line with the New Testament, where Salome's dance was to get John beheaded. But because Rita Hayworth was a big star, the last half of the film was rewritten to make Salome more sympathetic.
    • The film was essentially stolen from an idea by Cecil B. DeMille, who contacted Columbia Pictures about using Rita Hayworth in a film about Salome. The head of Columbia, Harry Cohn, had a screenwriter come up with a fifty-page treatment in one weekend so he could make the film instead.
