Trivia / SPISPOPD

  • Defictionalization: The first game was created in response to a joke regarding how Doom's one-word title resulted in a flood of casual "Where can I get Doom?" questions, which ended with a suggestion that id Software's next highly-anticipated game should be called Smashing Pumpkins into Small Piles of Putrid Debris to prevent this. The joke caught on, first resulting in the creation of a parody to The Doom FAQ, called "The SPISPOPD FAQ", which documented a fictional, soon-to-be-released game, before id themselves got in on the joke by adding the "idspispopd" cheat code into the final release of Doom, turning the joke into an Ascended Meme. At around the same time, Jamul (as Hamumu was known back then) proceeded to develop SPISPOPD and reportedly created it in about 48 hours, releasing it on December 10, 1993—the exact same date when Doom was released.
