Trivia / Rosewood (1997)

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: The film was mostly praised by critics and audiences, and it was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival, but it flopped at the box office. It's speculated this was because while it's widely agreed to be a well-made film, the subject matter is pretty dark and potentially put off a lot of potential viewers at the time of its release. Warner Bros. didn't do much to help the movie's chances either, including giving Rosewood a relatively small theatrical release in February and providing little in the way of marketing.
  • Box Office Bomb: The film only grossed $13 million at the box office, against its $30 million budget.
  • Direct to Video: Rosewood was released straight-to-video outside of the US.
  • Screwed by the Network: Warner Bros. didn't do a whole lot to set up Rosewood for box office success; they chose to release the film in February 1997 (a month that typically sees slow business at theatres), only sent the film out to less than 1000 theatres (quite small for a big budget studio picture) in the US, didn't even give it a theatrical release in other countries, and did hardly any marketing.
