Trivia / RimWorld

Go To

  • Ascended Fanon: The game's DLC packs introduce mechanics and features that had only been available as popular mods before, although Rimworld's dev team takes pains to give each feature their own unique spin; some of the free major updates also add content which originates in mods. Several well-known modders have also contributed to the development of the DLC content.
    • Royalty revolves around Psychic Powers, which act a lot like the magic abilities provided by mods like Rimworld of Magic.
    • Using prisoners as slave labour became this when Ideology introduced an option for the player to convert prisoners into slaves rather than proper colonists.
    • Children, genetic engineering and controllable mechanoids became an official part of the game with the Biotech addon.
    • The idea of older Mechanoids having a greenish-gray color and newer Mechanoids being pristine white was first used in the Vanilla Factions Expanded - Mechanoids mod. Coincidentally, the lore for the mod also states that these new mechanoids are controlled by humans and hostile to the ancient Mech hives, similar to how the players can build and control friendly Mechanoids in the Biotech DLC.
    • The Anomaly DLC:
      • The fleshbeasts bear a striking resemblance to the fleshbeasts in the mod Vanilla Genetics Expanded. This even results in a submod that renames them to avoid confusion.
      • In general, the cosmic horror/sci-fi horror focus of the Anomaly DLC brings in mind the Call of Cthulhu mods series (which adds rituals, events, and hostile Cthulhu Mythos-themed creatures raids), as well as the V.O.I.D. mod (which adds an overpowered antagonistic sci-fi horror faction).
    • Free major updates content:
      • The new animals added by the 1.1 free patch (released alongside the Royalty DLC) are a direct, official port of the mod Vanilla Animals Expanded — Livestock.
      • The 1.5 free patch (released alongside the Anomaly DLC) adds wall lights (originating from Wall Light), as well as books and bookshelves (originating from Vanilla Books Expanded).
  • Banned in China: The console ports were refused classification in Australia, effectively banning them for sale in the country. The original Steam version, bizarrely enough, was also taken out of the Steam Store for Australia. Fortunately, the Steam ban was eventually lifted on April 21st, 2022.
  • Meme Acknowledgment: Rimworld being dubbed "Ribworld" after disproving that the DLC would spell out the game's name, Ludeon would eventually get in on the action on April Fools by making 'announcing' a DLC called "Ribworld".
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: Players that supported a specific amount on Kickstarter, or are ready to pay a bit extra for their copy of the game, could create a colonist that may appear in other players' copies of the game. The game's options menu even allows you to filter submitted names and add them as "preferred" character names in case you get attached to any of them aside from your own.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Oskar Potocki, the creator of the popular Vanilla Expanded mod series and a freelance artist, has been hired by Ludeon as a graphic designer. Notably, one of his early VA mods, Vanilla Animal Expanded - Livestock, was integrated into the game wholesale during the 1.1 update.
