Trivia / Red Dwarf Season IV "Justice"

Go To

  • Author's Saving Throw: By this stage in the show's run, Rob Grant and Doug Naylor had realized how absurd it was that a lowly and incompetent technician such as Rimmer would have been put in charge of repairing something with the potential to kill the entire crew if it went wrong. Grant and Naylor would have retconned it out entirely if they could but couldn't think of a way to actually do so without causing major Continuity Snarls.note  They therefore did the next best thing and established that while Rimmer was technically responsible for the accident, the real guilty party was whoever assigned him to do the job in the first place (presumably either Captain Hollister or Todhunter).
  • Deleted Scene:
    • The boys take a walk in the "park" - the botanical gardens held in the "hanging scales" of Justice World. The scene was actually filmed in a London park, and extra effects were never added to it. Lister explains to the Cat how the Justice Field works, and soon after throws an empty can into one of the bins in the park but misses. In response to littering, a giant bird swoops down and defecates a great glob of reddish gunk on Lister.
    • Numerous extended dialogue scenes, including extra lines at Rimmer's trial.
  • Edited for Syndication: In a 2012 repeat, Kryten calling Rimmer an "under-achieving emotional retard" was cut.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • When the Justice Computer speaks through Holly's mouth, Hattie Hayridge suggested that she could just use a low voice rather than being dubbed over. In the end, James Smillie did the voice.
    • The script called for Lister to end his "fight" with the Simulant in the Justice Field by following the choking bit with Lister drawing a target on his crotch and advancing on the Simulant while thrusting his groin at him, prompting the Simulant to deliver a Groin Attack to itself. This wasn't filmed, probably for being a bit too silly.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: The ending scene where Lister muses on the meaning of justice before falling down a manhole was hastily thrown together late in filming, as Rob Grant and Doug Naylor had already decided to delete the botanical gardens scene and wanted something they could add into the episode in case the deletion of that scene caused the finished product to be too short (which it did).
