Trivia / Rats SMP

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Multiple server members who are inactive during a lore stream, usually someone not involved in a character's personal lore or the event, have been known to play NPCs, including the cats and various humans from the rats' backstories.
  • Blooper:
    • On Day 8, Acho accidentally falls off of Sniff's balcony trying to read some bushes trimmed to read "OJ" from above, but since the Garden hasn't been opened yet (and won't be until Day 19), he has to arrange to be caught and trapped out-of-universe… by the Gardener, an NPC who doesn't exist yet. He then proceeds to have to 'gaslight' Olive(r) about what just happened.
    • During Day 59, Alexandra, the Eldest Daughter, walks in on the rats writing out a note for her to adopt Kara as a pet crow… while being half her normal height. When this is realized, she runs out.
Martyn: (in narrator voice) None of the rats will remember anything that happened in the last five seconds. There was no tiny goth girl; only big goth girl exists. This propaganda should not be listened to.
    • On Day 60, the server crashes twice halfway through the "future" section of the "Ghosts of Ratmas" event… during which the creator-characters are tasked with decommissioning a Doomsday Device Time Bomb.
  • The Danza:
    • As standard for a Minecraft SMP, the characters typically share a name with the content creators they're respectively portrayed by, or go by a similar alias.
    • The Janitor's voice actor, like the Janitor himself, is also named Declan.
  • Descended Creator: Many of the server admins play NPC characters as well as working behind the scenes, most notably Mark MrMadSpy playing the Janitor in-game.
  • Directed by Cast Member: POWCreations owners Apokuna and OwengeJuice both play POV characters in the series, on top of testing out server mechanisms and sorting out various technical difficulties behind the scenes.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Several of the server events occur without the creators' foreknowledge of what would exactly happen in the event; for example, cc!Will was asked if it was fine for "something strange" to happen to his character, without knowing said "something strange" would be undergoing a Forced Transformation into a cat in-game.
  • Fake American: Oli has repeatedly stated that he's British and from Sheffield, but portrays a rat from New York.
  • Fan Community Nicknames: On Tumblr, the Rats SMP fandom uses the tag "Squeaksblr" as a designation to avoid conflicts in tagging on the site.
  • Friendship on the Set: Several of the content creators have noted that the recurring theme of found family and True Companions among the rats' storylines is a reflection of the content creators making or being friends with each other in real life throughout the series, especially those from different social/collaborative circles who met each other through Rats.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Like other Twitch-based livestreamed series, since Twitch VODs are deleted two months after they are livestreamed, most of the content creators don't archive their VODs or re-upload them to YouTube, and most aren't committed to adapting the SMP into YouTube episodes, the fans are left responsible for preserving the SMP's contents by unofficial VOD re-uploads.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Mr. Icraga is voiced by Joel Smallishbeans, who is married to Lizzie in real life.
    • Mrs. Icraga is voiced by Kristin, AKA "Mumza", who is married to guest member Philza in real life.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: The "Cat-astrophe" event on Day 47 did not go according to plan, as the cat clones weren't meant to kill each other or suffocate after Scott threw his first potion at them; the rest of the event had to be improvised by cc!Apo (who wasn't live during the event), various server admins/mods, and ex-beta testers of the map.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Meta; in the finale, Lizzie is the first rat Mr. Icraga targets and kills. Mr. Icraga is voiced by Joel, who is married to Lizzie the content creator in real life. Wouldn't be the first time he's targeted his wife for murder, though.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • According to a livestream a few months after the SMP ended, Joel Smallishbeans sent in two recordings for his appearances in the finale; while the one using his "normal content creator" accent (i.e. a more neutral British accent) is used in the series, there exists an alternate version where he plays up his northern accent from being raised in York.
    • MythicalSausage has stated twicenote  that he "missed out" on portraying "Papa Caspacito" (i.e. the Butler) in Rats due to being on a trip at the time.
  • Word of Gay: Indirectly; Martyn has confirmed in a Pirates SMP livestream that his character is pan, so his Rats character can be assumed to also be pan through Character Overlap.
  • You Might Remember Me from...:
    • Members of the Outsiders SMP on the Rats server include Acho, Apo, Bek, Eloise (as Soup), Krow, and Owen, alongside Rats guest Kyle. Rats members Will, Scott, and Water have also made appearances on Outsiders as guests/NPCs.
    • Scott, Lizzie, Oli, Jimmy, and Shelby have all played on the Empires SMP, alongside guest voice actors GeminiTay and Joel Smallishbeans (portraying the Eldest Daughter and the Father, respectively).
    • Tubbo was on the Dream SMP alongside guests TommyInnit, Ponk, Seapeekay, and Aimsey. Scott also makes two brief voice-only appearances: once non-canonically on one of Tubbo's livestreams, and then later canonically as a Voice-Only Cameo in Aimsey's character finale stream (unreleased during the Rats run-time).
    • Martyn, Scott, Jimmy, and Lizzie have all played on the Life SMP, alongside guest voice actors Joel and later Gem.
    • The brief crossover with the Origins SMP features Sneegsnag and Philza as guests; while Scott, Shelby, Tubbo, Aimsey, and Bek have also played on that server, its other server members include special guests Tommy and Billzo.
